OSM releases v2.3 of its industry-leading
user provisioning software – COSuser

September 2003

OSM has announced the release of v2.3 of its COSuser user provisioning software for heterogeneous networks of UNIX, Linux and Windows systems.

V2.3 of COSuser extends the basic functionality of centralized user administration, password synchronization and access control to include built-in support for web based, end user instigated "self-help" workflow, a "Wizard" technology for simple integration of third party applications, a new "Connector" for Exchange 2000, a simpler user interface, improved data encryption and auditing, and new data cleaning and import tools.

OSM builds adaptive systems management products for enterprises with a mixed network of Unix, Linux and Windows® servers.

COSuser – OSM’s proven, extensible, user provisioning software package for such organizations, has been significantly extended in this latest version of the product, in response to feedback from early users and input from leading market analysts in the directory and security fields.

User provisioning is a fast-growing niche within the security software market because of the way IT services get a fast Return on Investment (RoI), increased security, greater accountability, improved service levels for end users and a reduced workload for the help desk.

The most obvious improvements to COSuser for the end user have been in the user interface. It has a new, more intuitive front-end complemented by a web browser based workflow tool that enables end users to directly request access to new applications and/or resources, such as Windows shares.

Requests are automatically forwarded to appropriate line management for authorization and subsequent registration, further relieving the burden on help desk and operations teams. A particular benefit of the workflow manager is that it takes load off the help desk by allowing users to specify and change their own passwords.

Many of the problems associated with rolling out large user provisioning projects have been addressed in this new release. There is OSM's new agent reduction technology ("ART"), the effect of which is a diminished requirement to implement remote agents. It is accompanied by new web browser based self-registration software, advanced cleaning tools and an implementation methodology called "roles plus rules" that reduces the need for complex role structures to be established. The result is a quicker, leaner installation with an even faster Return on Investment (RoI).

The fast growing demand for this type of software, together with the large number of applications it must cover, has resulted in OSM authoring a TKB Wizard. The Wizard allows new databases, middleware and applications to be integrated into COSuser in the minimum amount of time. It is OSM's intention that the Wizard will be licensed to various partners and end users as well as being used by our own professional services operation.

The first releases of COSuser v2.3 have been tested to ensure compatibility with several of the most common operating systems, specifically:

  • Sun™ Solaris

  • IBM AIX

  • HP-UX

  • HP/Compaq Tru64

  • Linux

  • Windows® NT 4 and Windows® 2000
