Press Release

OSM releases COSuser - the first complete product for user account management on UNIX and NT

SEATTLE, WA, USA. March 29, 2000

OSM today announced the release of COSuser, the latest addition to COSMOS, its range of IT operations management products for UNIX, Linux and NT.

COSuser enables IT organizations to radically improve the processes through which users are given access to infrastructure objects that is, computer systems, databases and the applications which run on them. It is a result of two years’ development effort funded by a $6 million investment from the venture capital firm, 3i.

The increasing complexity of client-server infrastructures and the growing number of staff requiring access to them means that the rate of user-to-object registrations continues to accelerate. Today, each infrastructure object (operating system, database or application) is usually administered by its own specialists, leading to the loss of 20-30% of production effort at a typical mixed UNIX and NT site. Seen another way, the full time of one person may easily be absorbed in administering 500 users.

The indisputable shortage of suitably skilled people underlines the need for an automated solution.

Until now, automation has proven difficult. The problems of embedding the administrators’ knowledge into software have inhibited the production of affordable products which could be deployed across enterprises. COSuser is the first 100% solution.

COSuser:

  • provides centralized administration of user accounts across all infrastructure objects in a mixed server environment

  • uses the concept of roles to simplify the complexities of entering user characteristics

  • automates many user-management processes and provides workflow management for the rest to be delegated and their results audited

  • reinforces security through password synchronization and strength control coupled with rule-based access management

  • can take input from a human resources application to further reduce administrative intervention

  • is easily extended beyond its standard capabilities via a simple Wizard tool

  • is open-ended, so may be used "out of the box" or extended by OSM using the RUMA (Rapid User Management Analysis) methodology for a complete solution to requirements of any scale

Matt Trimmer, OSM’s Product Marketing Manager for COSuser said, "COSuser helps IT organizations deal with some of their biggest challenges. It significantly reduces operations’ costs, it liberates skilled employees to combat the skills shortage and it improves service levels through foolproof management of the user population."

COSuser incorporates OSM’s expertise gained during the past four years building user administration solutions, handling up to 50,000 users. A key result is that implementation times are short. Jörg-Andrees Otte, of Kraft Jacobs Suchard (a subsidiary of Kraft Foods), an early site for COSuser stated "Once we agreed with OSM on the requirements, specification and terms of reference for testing, the whole solution was implemented in 40 days."

Neil Chaney, OSM’s President and CEO responded, "OSM takes a particular interest in generating rapid Return on Investment (RoI) for the users of its products. Organizations who are prepared to take a new look at the way user accounts are administered will benefit both financially and procedurally from the implementation of COSuser."
